THE ROYAL HAMILTON LIGHT INFANTRY

Plage Blanche . White Beach

Canada is a Federation of equipped Provinces d'une great autonomy. Recruitment in the units of combat is primarily provincial. Survival of the old provincial militia, the men s'engagent in unit of their province. Only the units of service escape from this type of recruitment and brew the manpower come from all the Federate Provinces of Canada. Thus the regiments bear a recalling name is an ancian militia or the Province from which they result. The R L H I was created on December 11, 1862 under the name of 13th battalion of volunteers of the Militia. It becomes Royal Hamilton Light Infantry only about 1920. Meanwhile it fought in June 1866 against invaders come from the United States. September 1, 1939, it is reactivated but does not leave for l'Angleterre that on July 22, 1940. For the raid of Dieppe, 582 Rileys are under the command of the lieutenant-colonel Robert "Bob" Labatt. At the evening of August 19: 186 men died and 177 are prisoners, a small hundred d'hommes is save.Les general Sherwood LETT and William Wallace SOUTHAW also unloaded on the beaches white and red whereas the lieutenant-colonel Johnny ANDREWS (attached to Lett) was wounded before unloading. We will find these units, with a supplemented manpower, in the Battle of Normandy, the combat for the Release of France, Belgium and the Netherlands. The 2nd Canadian division is dissolved on December 31, 1945.
